74nd Annual LA County Science & Engineering Fair 2024
Special Awards
Los Angeles Chapter- March 2024
March 13, 2024
The LA Chapter again (going on 3 decades) supported the 74nd Annual LA County Science & Engineering Fair in the Special Awards category. Unlike the previous two years, the 2023 Los Angeles County Science and Engineering Fair, held March 10th through 11,th was conducted in-person at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown Los Angeles. Nearly 700 projects were submitted in the Junior and Senior Divisions. Our chapter judged the best “weather-related” projects in the Junior and Senior divisions (Middle and High Schools). After interviewing participants, it was decided to award two top prizes (1-year subscription to Weatherwise and membership to the Chapter) and two honorable mentions.
The first top prize went to Colin Hwang, 11th grader from La Canada H.S., whose project, “The factors that affect solar energy production,” used measurements of his home’s solar panels electricity generation while recording weather conditions, time of day and solar angles. Colin also compared south and east facing panels.
The second top prize was awarded Benjamin Kuzoyan, a 7th grader at La Canada Prepatory School, La Canada. His project, “Solar Power”, also used his home’s solar collector data. Benjamin looked at weather conditions to explain the variation in solar energy produced. His display, like Colin’s, was clear and concise on how he collected his information and the orientation of his solar panels.
The two honorable mention certificates went to Ione McLaine, 8th grader from Science Academy Magnet School, LAUSD and the team of Sophie Audu, Noah Figueroa and Charles Onulgbo, all 8th graders from Rudecinda Sepulveda Dodson Gifted Magnet School, LAUSD. Ione’s project, “How does air quality relate to home values, family income, demographics, school rating and performance and pollution burden,” included a lot of detail about the air quality of greater Los Angeles, but also how they related to environmental inequities. Ione’s research was very commendable. Sophie, Noah and Charles looked at how the color of houses influenced heating both outside (roof) and inside model wooden houses painted different colors. As expected, the white painted house was the coolest.
Judging projects this year was chapter member Steve LaDochy.

The COMET Program is pleased to announce the publication of the three short introductory meteorology lessons:
Met 101: Introduction to the Atmosphere(https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1287)
Met 101: Basic Weather Processes (https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1289)
Met 101: Introduction to the World's Oceans(https://www.meted.ucar.edu/training_module.php?id=1288)
The three short lessons provide newcomers to the field of meteorology with an introduction to the atmosphere and oceans, as well as the main processes involved in setting up Earth's weather. Topics covered include Earth's heat balance and circulation, global winds, water vapor and the hydrologic cycle, stability and parcel theory, clouds, thunderstorms, ocean currents, tides, and atmospheric and oceanic measurements. The lessons in total offer 90-110 minutes of content (Introduction to the Atmosphere - 35-45 min, Basic Weather Processes - 35-45 min, Introduction to the World's Oceans - 20 min).
We welcome any comments or questions you may have regarding the content, instructional approach, or use of this lesson. Please e-mail your comments or questions to Bruce Muller (bmuller AT ucar.edu), Vanessa Vincente (vincente AT ucar.edu), or Amy Stevermer (asteverm AT ucar.edu). AMS MINORITY FELLOWSHIP AND
SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMS
The American Meteorological Society is pleased to announce the 2015 AMS/Industry Minority Scholarships. Now entering its twenty-second year, the scholarship is intended to help support college education for minority students traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, especially Hispanic/Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native, Black/African American, and Native Hawaiian Students, who intend to pursue careers in the atmospheric and related oceanic and hydrologic sciences. The two-year scholarships, funded through donations made by members to the AMS Annual Giving Program, are for $3000 during the freshman year and $3000 during the sophomore year (sophomore year funding depends on successful completion of the freshman academic year). Minority students who will be entering their freshman year of college in the fall of 2015 are eligible to apply.
Thanks to past assistance, we have had a successful twenty-one years. Since the inception of the program, we have awarded the scholarships to over one hundred outstanding students. I hope that all of you will assist us again in distributing information about this valuable program. The AMS web site includes a link to the information and application, which is in PDF printable format. Feel free to print and make several copies for distribution. I am providing a direct link for your convenience http://www.ametsoc.org/amsstudentinfo/scholfeldocs/industryminorityscholarship.html
Six AMS Local Chapters around the country have been asked to serve as the collection and initial screening locations for scholarship applications. The bottom of the application form lists the local chapters that will receive scholarship applications this year. Please inform the teachers and/or students to send the original completed application to the listed chapter nearest them. Students should send a photocopy of application materials to AMS Headquarters.
Information on all AMS fellowship and scholarship programs is available on the Internet at: http://www.ametsoc.org and can be found by navigating through the student resource pages.
